The basic unit for measuring a Marla used to be the Karm, or a footstep of average length, i.e., 5.5 Feet. This system was used for Marla’s standardization during British Rule.

This standard measurement of 1 Marla= 272.25 Square Feet, but different Housing schemes currently consider three Marla measurements in Pakistan. Before describing these various Marla measurements, it is necessary to know what these units are and how to measure standard Marla.

Marla to Square feet, Square Yards, Square Meters, Square Inches, and Acres

Marla

The Marla was standardized under British raj to equal the square rod, 272.25 square feet, 30.25 square yards, or 25.2929 square meters. As such, it was exactly one 160th of an acre.

How to Measure a Marla?

During British rule, the standard Marla was equal to 9 square Kamra. A kamra is an average footstep of 5.5 feet in length. Here is how to measure a standard Marla without any measuring tape.

  •  Keep in mind the formula of Area= Length x Width
  •  Walk three steps lengthwise of the land (1 footstep= 5.5 Feet and 3 Steps=16.5 feet)
  •  Again, walk three steps along the width of the plot (1 footstep= 5.5 Feet and 3 Steps=16.5 feet)
  •  Now, you have walked a total of 6 footsteps or 6 Kamra.
  •  Put the values in the formula.

1 Marla Area= Length x Width

1 Marla Area= 3 footstep x 3 footstep (1 footstep= 5.5 feet)

1 Marla Area= 3 (5.5) x 3(5.5) or 16.5 x 16.5

1 Marla Area= 272.25 Square Feet

Above is the calculation of Marla. However, you can also measure a Marla using a measuring tape or measuring rod. Compute 16.5 feet in length and 16.5 feet as a width of the land and then multiply both.

Acres

It is a standard measure of the area that is widely used in the U.S. and U.K.

One acre equals 4,840 square yards (4,047 square meters) or 0.405 hectare; 640 acres equals one square mile.

In Pakistan, the traditional unit used for the measurement of plot size is ‘Marla’. Apart from Marla, the plots are also measured in terms of square feet, gaz, or square meters.
